Shin Saimdang was born on October 29, 1504, in Joseon-era Korea. She became known as a painter, poet and calligrapher, celebrated for delicate paintings of plants and insects.
Her son, Yi I, became one of Korea's most famous Confucian philosophers. For centuries she was honored mainly as an ideal mother, but today her art is valued in its own right.
In 2009 she became the first woman to appear on a South Korean banknote, the 50,000-won note.
Which historical figure would you put on a banknote?
