A country gained its independence without firing a shot.

On October 26, 1905, King Oscar II renounced his claim to the Norwegian throne and Sweden recognized Norway as a fully independent state. It peacefully ended the union between the two countries that had existed since 1814.

Norwegians had voted overwhelmingly for dissolution, and negotiators on both sides chose compromise over conflict. Weeks later, a Danish prince became Norway's new king, Haakon VII. The peaceful split is still cited as a model for settling disputes between neighbors.

Can you think of another country that gained independence peacefully?
