On October 25, 1917, by the Julian calendar Russia still used, the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin moved to seize power in Petrograd, taking key points across the city and, overnight, the Winter Palace, seat of the Provisional Government. By the Gregorian calendar, it was November 7.

The October Revolution led to the creation of the Soviet Union, a state that would shape the course of the 20th century, from World War II to the Cold War.
