A single confusing order sent hundreds of cavalrymen in exactly the wrong direction.

On October 25, 1854, during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, a garbled command passed between British officers sent the Light Brigade charging down a valley straight toward Russian artillery, instead of the target the commander had intended.

The charge became a symbol of both courage and military blunder. Weeks later, Alfred, Lord Tennyson published "The Charge of the Light Brigade," and the event became one of the most famous episodes of the 19th century.

What do you think: heroism, tragedy, or both?
