On this day · OCTOBER 25
1764
Before he was president, he was a young lawyer marrying the minister's daughter.
On October 25, 1764, John Adams married Abigail Smith in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Their marriage lasted 54 years, through revolution, war, long separations and the presidency.
While John was away in Philadelphia and Europe, the two exchanged more than a thousand letters. In them Abigail argued politics, ran the family farm and famously urged her husband to "remember the ladies." Those letters are still one of the best windows into the founding era.
