On October 27, 1904, the Interborough Rapid Transit Company opened New York City's first subway line. It ran 9.1 miles, with 28 stations from City Hall to 145th Street and Broadway. Crowds lined up to try it the very first evening.
The subway changed how the city grew: neighborhoods far from downtown became reachable, and millions of people could live in one place and work in another. Today the system carries millions of riders every weekday and runs 24 hours a day.
What's the best — or strangest — subway ride you've ever taken?
