He rebuilt Rome — and was murdered by his own court.
On October 24, AD 51, Domitian was born, the younger son of the future emperor Vespasian. In 81 he became emperor himself and ruled for 15 years.
His reign left a lasting mark: a new forum, a grand palace on the Palatine Hill, and major work on the frontier line along the Rhine and Danube rivers. But he governed with an increasingly heavy hand, clashing with the Senate. In September 96 a plot involving palace officials, the praetorian prefects and even his wife ended his life — and with it the Flavian dynasty.
Why it still matters: Domitian is a classic case study in how power without trust collapses from the inside.
Should leaders be judged more by what they build or by how they rule?
