He ruled two kingdoms and earned a nickname most kings never get.

Magnus I Olafsson died on October 25, 1047, in Skibby, Denmark. Son of King Olaf II, later venerated as Saint Olaf, he became king of Norway in 1035 while still a boy and added the crown of Denmark in 1042.

He became known as Magnus the Good. As a young king he took revenge on the chiefs who had fought against his father, but he later turned away from that kind of lawlessness, and the name stuck.

Why it still matters: his reign shows how a ruler's reputation can change when he chooses restraint over revenge.
