On this day · OCTOBER 25
1900
She led thousands of market women and forced a king off his throne.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was born on October 25, 1900, in Abeokuta, in what is now Nigeria. She was the first girl to attend Abeokuta Grammar School, and in 1946 she became the first president of the Abeokuta Women's Union.

When the local ruler imposed a special tax on women, the union organized huge protests from 1947, which contributed to his temporary abdication in 1949. She went on to campaign for women's voting rights and Nigerian independence. She was also the mother of musician Fela Kuti.

Why it still matters: she showed how organized ordinary women could change politics.

Which women from history do you think deserve far more recognition?
