On October 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The colossal copper figure was a gift from the people of France, designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with an internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel.
Americans paid for the pedestal, helped by a newspaper fundraising campaign led by Joseph Pulitzer.
For generations of immigrants arriving by sea, she was the first glimpse of a new life. Today she remains one of the most recognized symbols of freedom on Earth.
