Some countries get their names from history. Tanzania got its name from a blend.

In April 1964, mainland Tanganyika and the islands of Zanzibar united into one state. At first it carried both names: the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

On October 29, 1964, the union was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania, combining the first letters of Tanganyika and Zanzibar into a single new word.

More than 60 years later the union endures, home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the spice islands of Zanzibar.
