Sometimes history turns on a single word: no.

Before dawn on October 28, 1940, Fascist Italy demanded that Greece allow Italian troops to occupy strategic points in the country. Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected the ultimatum, and within hours Italian forces invaded from Albania.

Greek forces pushed the invaders back into Albania over the following weeks, one of the first major Allied successes of World War II.

Today Greeks and Cypriots celebrate October 28 as Ohi Day, honoring the courage to refuse.

When has saying no taken the most courage in history?
