The peace treaty that ended World War I created the International Labour Organization, built on the idea that lasting peace depends on social justice.
On October 29, 1919, its first conference opened in Washington. Over the following month, delegates of governments, employers and workers adopted the ILO's first conventions, starting with a limit of eight hours a day and 48 hours a week in industry, plus rules on child labor and maternity protection.
The ILO still sets labor standards worldwide.
