Joseph Pulitzer, the Hungarian-born publisher of the New York World, died on October 29, 1911, aboard his yacht in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina.
Pulitzer had built one of the most widely read newspapers in America. In his will he left money to Columbia University to found a school of journalism and to create annual prizes.
The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in 1917. Today they honor reporting, books, drama and music.
