The world's most popular sport got its rulebook in a London pub.
On October 26, 1863, representatives of a group of clubs and schools met at the Freemasons' Tavern in London and formed the Football Association. Led by Ebenezer Cobb Morley, they set out to agree on one set of rules, because every school and club had been playing its own version.
Within weeks they published the first Laws of the Game. The debate over carrying the ball helped split association football from rugby, and the FA remains the oldest football association in the world.
