Thirteen ships against more than 130. Almost no one would have bet on the smaller fleet.

On October 26, 1597, during the Japanese invasions of Korea, Admiral Yi Sun-sin faced a vastly larger Japanese fleet in the narrow Myeongnyang Strait. Rather than meet them in open water, he used the strait's powerful, shifting currents to his advantage.

His victory halted the Japanese advance by sea and lifted Korean morale at a desperate moment. Yi Sun-sin is still honored as a national hero in Korea, and the battle inspired one of the country's highest-grossing films.
