Why does Austria throw a national party every October 26?

After World War II, Austria was occupied by the four Allied powers for ten years. The 1955 State Treaty restored its sovereignty, and the last foreign troops left that autumn. On October 26, 1955, Austria's parliament passed a constitutional law declaring the country permanently neutral.

Neutrality kept Austria out of military alliances during the Cold War and helped Vienna become a meeting place for diplomacy and home to major international organizations. Since 1965, October 26 has been the country's National Day.
