On October 27, 1938, the DuPont company publicly announced nylon, a new synthetic fiber developed by a team led by chemist Wallace Carothers. It was the first fully synthetic fiber, made from chemicals rather than plants or animals.
Toothbrush bristles came first, and when nylon stockings went on sale nationwide in 1940, women lined up in huge numbers to buy them. During World War II, nylon was used for parachutes and ropes.
Today it's in clothing, carpets, gear, car parts and countless everyday objects.
How many nylon items can you spot around you?
