On this day · OCTOBER 24
1788
You probably learned her poem as a child, and you may celebrate her holiday next month.

Sarah Josepha Hale was born on October 24, 1788, in Newport, New Hampshire. In 1830 she published "Mary's Lamb," the rhyme we now know as "Mary Had a Little Lamb." From 1837 she edited Godey's Lady's Book for forty years, making it one of the most influential magazines in America.

Beginning in 1846, she wrote to presidents and politicians urging a national day of Thanksgiving. After 17 years, her letter to Abraham Lincoln helped persuade him, and in 1863 he proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving.

Why it still matters: one persistent writer helped create a tradition millions still share every November.
